Remember that one conversation is never enough, so you may need to have secondary discussions to review progress. So, once the issue is on the table, action needs to be taken on the part of all parties involved. A courageous conversation opens the door for improvement. So don’t hold back from emphasizing the impact of their past actions as well as the benefits that applying your criticisms can have. The goal of a courageous conversation is to open your team members’ eyes to how their performance or behavior has affected the work environment and realize the need for change or improvement. While you may be concerned about your coworker’s feelings, you may hinder progress if you sugarcoat your concerns. Be straightforward, confident, and, if necessary, firm. Once you’ve laid the groundwork for a positive conversation, it’s time to address the issue at hand. Once the other person sees that the purpose of this conversation isn’t just to reprimand them, they will be more open to listen and take your words to heart. Commend them on their strengths or others’ performance breakthroughs that you’ve observed in their work.
